# Demand per law office

How much legal demand there is for each law office, state by state: five public datasets joined by state, against 177,138 private law-office establishments in the 51 states.

Checked October 30, 2026 · CC BY 4.0 · Not legal advice

## What is in this dataset? {#what-h}

Where there is the most legal demand for each law office. Five public datasets joined by state: private law-office establishments (2026 Q1, 177,138 in the 51 states) against residents, bankruptcy cases commenced (12 months ending 2026-09-30), fatal crashes (2024), divorces in the last 12 months and Spanish speakers with limited English (ACS 2020-2024), and eviction filings for the 23 states with recent eviction data. Each state is placed in the highest, middle or lowest third on every ratio and overall.

Use it to see where demand is high for each existing law office, so you know where a new market, a new practice area or more ad spend has the most demand behind it. A ratio is demand events divided by the state's law offices; the row says how many law offices it rests on.

State records of five committed public datasets are joined by state code; each ratio is demand divided by law offices in integer arithmetic and rounded to one decimal; states are ranked on each ratio and placed in thirds; the overall third ranks the states on the sum of the four core ranks.

Not legal advice. These are counts from public datasets divided by the number of private law-office establishments; a law office is an establishment, not a lawyer, and a state with a high ratio is not necessarily short of lawyers.

## What are the limits? {#limits-h}
- Each row states how many law offices it rests on. The whole table is 177,138 law offices in the 51 states.
- A ratio is a count of events (cases, crashes, divorces, residents) divided by the state's law-office establishments. It is not a count of lawyers or of unmet need.
- Periods differ by measure and are stated: law offices 2026-Q1, bankruptcy cases to 2026-09-30, fatal crashes 2024, ACS 2020-2024; eviction filings only for the 23 states whose eviction data ends in 2025-06 or later.
- Thirds rank the states against each other: the highest third has the most demand for each law office.
- Records older than 130 days since their last check are marked `stale` in the files until we re-check them. Every confirmed error we fix is listed in the [data corrections log](https://probativegrowth.com/data/corrections/).
