How we checked each rule
- P Primary source
- We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
- S Secondary source
- A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
- D ABA model default
- The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
- U Open question
- Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.
Alabama has the longest set sentence of any state we track. Every communication carries “No representation is made that the quality of the legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.”, all 154 characters of it, and every ad goes to the Bar’s General Counsel within 3 days of first use. Those two rules decide how an Alabama campaign is built.
Not legal advice. This summary of Alabama’s rules is for marketing planning, and most of it rests on secondary sources. The Alabama State Bar decides what its rules require; confirm each point with your counsel.
Alabama rules in plain English
Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean).
Filing: a copy within 3 days
A copy of each ad goes to the Bar’s General Counsel within 3 days after first use. The Bar’s own page confirms the duty; the timing comes from a white paper. We found no filing fee, which also needs confirming.

Claims, referral payments and languages
Alabama’s claims rules follow the ABA model, with the set sentence on top (S). Two points rest on the ABA default (D) until we read Alabama’s text: payments for leads, which may buy advertising but never a recommendation or a share of fees, and ads in other languages, where we carry the set sentence in the ad’s language. Our Spanish draft is 148 characters: “No se afirma que la calidad de los servicios legales que se prestarán sea superior a la calidad de los servicios legales que prestan otros abogados.” A native writer and a second reviewer check it, and your attorney approves it (ABA Model Rule 7.2).
Recording, texting and privacy
Recording takes one party’s consent (S · recording guide). The 2026 trackers show no Alabama texting statute with private suits (D · tracker). A privacy law, the Alabama Personal Data Protection Act, starts May 1, 2027: it covers controllers that process the data of 25,000 or more consumers or earn 25% of revenue from selling data, and exempts businesses under 500 employees unless they sell data (S · comparison chart · DLA Piper).

What this means for your SEO and ads in Alabama
Search ads can’t hold the sentence
Google keeps only headline 1, headline 2 and description 1 in place every time, a description holds 90 characters, and the second description isn’t guaranteed (Google). At 154 characters, the Alabama sentence can’t be guaranteed in a standard search ad. Before Alabama search campaigns run, counsel decides how the sentence is carried, and that decision goes in the approval file.
Formats with room carry it in full
Display images, video end cards, Meta primary text and the firm’s own web pages can hold the whole sentence. On the website, the footer is the natural place, so it appears on every page and every landing page.
The 3-day clock
Every new version is a new ad, and its copy goes to the General Counsel within 3 days of first use. We prepare the copy, with its duration and where it ran, and alert on days 1 and 2; your attorney sends it.
Columbus crosses from Georgia
The Columbus metro is mostly in Georgia, and its Alabama side is Phenix City. A Georgia firm whose ads reach that side must meet Alabama’s sentence and filing; an Alabama firm aiming at the whole metro meets Georgia’s rules too (Georgia).
Language demand is small but real
Spanish is spoken at home by about 4% of Alabamians, and about 41% of them speak English less than “very well”. Korean comes next among other languages, and 60.2% of its speakers report limited English, the highest share in Alabama’s top languages.

Questions firms ask
- What sentence must every Alabama lawyer communication include?
