Personal injury ad rules in California
Personal injury firms: the filing duty, platform policies and Spanish demand in California.

What San Diego clients search, how AI answers pick a lawyer, Spanish demand near the border, federal venue and California ad rules for San Diego firms.
San Diego is a market with a border, a large military community and a steady flow of visitors. Those three facts shape how clients search and which practice areas show up. This page covers search, Spanish demand, courts and California ad rules for firms here.
San Diego searches lean on three audiences that Los Angeles firms see less of: service members and veterans, cross-border families, and tourists hurt on vacation. A military divorce, a veterans benefits appeal and a rideshare accident near the Gaslamp district are all San Diego matters, and each draws different search wording.
For AI answers, the wording that matters is the one clients actually use: neighborhood names such as La Jolla, Chula Vista or Oceanside, not just “San Diego”. When an AI assistant lists firms, it favors the ones whose pages say clearly which of those places they serve and what they handle. See our guide to local SEO for law firms.
Immigration, criminal defense, family law, personal injury and veterans work get the most local attention. Pairing a firm’s Google profile with pages for each of those, written for the person searching rather than for a ranking tool, is where we start.
In the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metro area, about 748,300 people aged 5 and over speak Spanish at home (margin of error ±6,995; ACS 2020-2024). Of those, about 262,499 of them speak English less than “very well” (margin of error ±4,674). These are survey estimates from the Census Bureau, so the true value could be higher or lower by the margin shown, which is a 90 percent margin of error.
South of the 5 freeway toward the border, Spanish is often the first language of the person calling. Cross-border families also search for help with matters that touch both countries, so a Spanish page for a firm here should say plainly which of those matters the firm does and does not handle.

Federal cases from the county go to the San Diego courthouse, and the district’s docket is busy with border-related criminal and immigration matters. State cases start in the San Diego County Superior Court, which has several branches across the county.
| Level | Court | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Federal | Southern District of California | The statute says the Southern District is the smallest of the four in the state and covers only San Diego and Imperial counties, with court held at San Diego and El Centro (28 U.S.C. §84). |
| State | County Superior Court | Cases begin in the Superior Court of the county where the matter arose or the defendant lives. |
The court you file in does not change what your ad may say. Advertising rules come from California law and the State Bar.
San Diego firms often have clients who live across the county line or across the border. Target by where people are located rather than by interest, so you know which state’s rules each ad has to meet. Each ad names a California lawyer or the firm and the city, town or county of an office (B&P §6157.2(b)).
If your firm has a satellite office in Chula Vista or Carlsbad, the ad should name the city of an office it actually has. Our California ad rules page lists the other California-specific rules. Whoever pays for an ad keeps a true copy for one year (B&P §6159.1), and if the State Bar finds substantial evidence against an electronic ad, it must come down within 72 hours (B&P §6158.4). This is general information, not legal advice; your lawyer approves the final text.
“A true and correct copy of any advertisement made by a person or licensee shall be retained for one year” (California Business and Professions Code, keeping a copy of each ad)

Military families search for specific needs: custody during a deployment, veterans benefits, or a crash on base. Pages that speak to those situations and name the bases or areas you serve are more useful than a general page. Check your state bar rules before using words like "specialist" or "expert".
Ads shown to people outside the United States raise different questions, including whether you may practice for them. Talk to your own ethics counsel first. We target ads by the location where your license and office make sense.
The Southern District of California, which covers San Diego and Imperial counties. That affects where you file federal cases, not what your ad may say.
