How we checked each rule

P Primary source
We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
S Secondary source
A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
D ABA model default
The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
U Open question
Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.

Connecticut asks more of a law-firm ad than any other New England state. Ads are filed with the Statewide Grievance Committee at or before first use, every domain name the firm uses is reported each quarter, and contact with accident victims waits 40 days, the longest period we track. Its privacy act also reaches any business that processes sensitive data, which can include an injury firm’s intake.

Not legal advice. The filing rule here comes from the Judicial Branch’s own page; most other points are secondary. The Statewide Grievance Committee applies the rules, so confirm them with counsel before relying on any.

Connecticut rules in plain English

Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean).

Filing: at or before first use, and domains each quarter

Ads are filed at or before first use through the Committee’s e-services, with no fee. Domain names are reported quarterly. An advisory opinion costs $100.

Lead sources

Marked D: until Connecticut’s text is checked, the ABA default lets a firm pay for advertising but not for a recommendation or a share of fees (ABA Model Rule 7.2).

Recording and calls

Phone recordings need all parties’ consent, with civil liability (§52-570d). Under §42-288a, sales calls run 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., consent is the default with carve-outs for consumer inquiries, texts are covered, and penalties come under the state’s unfair-practices act.

Privacy and health data

The Connecticut Data Privacy Act (2023, amended 2026) covers controllers that process the data of 35,000 or more consumers, process any sensitive data, or sell any personal data. Its consumer health-data rules apply to any person and ban geofencing within 1,750 feet of certain facilities; the Attorney General enforces them.

What this means for your SEO and ads in Connecticut

Every launch files first

Because ads are filed at or before first use, nothing runs until its filing is in. We prepare each e-services filing; your attorney submits it. New headlines, new videos and new landing pages that work as ads each count.

Domains are part of the filing calendar

Microsites, campaign domains and redirect domains all go on the quarterly list. Before buying a domain for a campaign, add it to the next report; we keep the list and remind your attorney each quarter.

Forty days, and no shortcuts

The 40-day period is the longest we track. Search ads and replies to people who asked are not targeted contact, but anything aimed at a recent accident victim is out.

Intake and privacy

  • Recording notices on every tracked line, since phone recording takes all parties’ consent.
  • Calling hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., narrower than our usual 8 a.m. start, so Connecticut follow-up begins at 9.
  • Sensitive-data coverage. The privacy act’s “any sensitive data” trigger can reach a firm whose forms collect injury details, so check coverage with counsel and keep tags off those pages.

Languages

Spanish is spoken at home by 13.0% of residents, the highest share in New England after Rhode Island, and Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury leads the state’s metros at about 17%. Portuguese, Chinese and Polish follow.

  • Which of the firm’s web pages and domains count as ads to file or report?
  • Does the 40-day period match the Practice Book’s current text?
