How we checked each rule
- P Primary source
- We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
- S Secondary source
- A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
- D ABA model default
- The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
- U Open question
- Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.
Louisiana is one of seven states that make lawyers file ads, and the only one that puts the bar’s filing number inside the ad. Ads are filed at or before first use, each names a responsible lawyer and an office city, results carry a disclaimer, and a statute adds the lawyer’s fee next to any verdict figure. For search ads with 30-character headlines, those rules push the copy toward content that needs no filing at all.
Not legal advice. We summarize Louisiana’s rules and statutes for marketing planning. The Louisiana State Bar Association and the courts apply them, fees change, and the rules change. Check each point with counsel before an ad runs.
Louisiana rules in plain English
Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean).
Filing: at or before first use

The fee next to the verdict
By statute, an ad citing a settlement or verdict also discloses the attorney fees from it, in type at least half the size of the ad’s largest font (R.S. 37:223). Its enforceability is debated.

Lead generators and referral services
Marked D, the ABA Model Rule default governs until we check Louisiana’s text. A Louisiana firm can pay for ads and a qualified referral service’s normal charges, but not for anyone’s recommendation, and a lead vendor must not recommend the firm or split fees.
Spanish and other languages
Required statements appear in the ad’s language, and filings include an English translation.

Privacy: a law from 2027
Act 502 takes effect January 1, 2027. It covers controllers with $25 million or more in revenue, that process the data of 75,000 or more consumers, or that earn half their revenue from selling data.

What this means for your SEO and ads in Louisiana
Search ads: safe harbor first
A Louisiana search ad has to carry a lawyer’s full name, an office city and, unless exempt, a filing number, inside 30-character headlines and 90-character descriptions (Google). That’s why our Louisiana search ads stay within safe-harbor content until your counsel clears more: safe-harbor ads need no filing and no number. Display, video and social ads, which have more room, go through the full filing.
Filing workflow
- Hold until the number arrives. A filed ad waits for its number, which then goes into the ad itself.
- Every version files. A new headline, a new video cut or a new image is a new version, with new approval and a new filing.
- Translations ride along. Spanish or Vietnamese ads are filed with an accurate English translation, and their required statements are in the ad’s own language.
Results and verdicts
Keep dollar results out of ads. If a page or ad does cite one, it needs “Results May Vary” or similar, and, under R.S. 37:223, the attorney fees from that result in type at least half the size of the largest font. Until counsel resolves how the statute applies, treat it as binding.
Your website and SEO pages
- List every jurisdiction of licensure on the site, typically in the footer and on each lawyer’s page.
- Results pages carry the disclaimer, and testimonials disclose payment if any was made.
- Practice and city pages for New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Shreveport follow the same content rules as ads; confirm with counsel whether any page needs filing.
Spanish, French and Vietnamese
Spanish is spoken at home by 5.1% of Louisianans age 5 and older, but 51.1% of them speak English less than “very well”, the second-highest share of any state. French, including Cajun, is next at 1.4%, the third-highest French share among the 50 states and DC, and only 12.9% of its speakers speak English less than “very well”. Vietnamese (0.5%) has a much higher limited-English share, 54.0% (Census, below). Since Google’s September 2026 change, the ad’s language, not a setting, decides which language’s searches it can win (Google).
- Spanish intake matters more than the share suggests. When half of Spanish speakers speak English less than “very well”, an English-only intake line can lose them.
- Vietnamese is worth testing only with Vietnamese-speaking intake ready before the first ad.

| Vietnamese | 0.52% | 54.0% |
| Arabic | 0.28% | 33.3% |

Questions for your counsel
- When can Louisiana search ads go beyond safe-harbor content, and how should the filing number appear in them?
- Is R.S. 37:223 enforceable, and how should a verdict figure carry the fee disclosure?
- Do any of the firm’s web pages need filing?
How Probative works in Louisiana
- We prepare the filing; your attorney files. Each filing pack holds the ad, the English translation of any non-English part and the filing form. Your attorney signs, files and pays, and the ad waits for its number.
- Safe-harbor search ads until your counsel clears more, with the full filing for formats that have room.
- Licensure listed on every page we build.
Probative works with law firms in every state from day one, remotely and in person; travel terms are on the pricing page. Your attorney approves every ad before it runs, and where a state requires a filing, we prepare it and your attorney files it. Every Monday you see what each signed case cost, counted from your own records under The Probative Standard. The lawyer advertising rules by state table compares every state.
Questions firms ask
- Do Louisiana lawyers have to file their ads?
- Yes. Non-exempt ads are filed with the Louisiana State Bar Association at or before first use, for $175, or $275 late. Ads limited to safe-harbor content are exempt, and an advisory opinion can be requested 30 days ahead.
- What is the Louisiana filing number, and where does it go?
- Each filed ad gets a bar filing number, and that number appears in each non-exempt ad. Because a search ad has little room, our default keeps Louisiana search ads within safe-harbor content, which needs no filing and no number.
- Do Louisiana ads need a results disclaimer?
- Yes. Any reference to results needs a disclaimer such as “Results May Vary”, and paid testimonials are disclosed. A separate statute, R.S. 37:223, also requires the attorney fees to be shown next to a settlement or verdict figure, though its enforceability is debated.
- Must a Louisiana law firm website list where its lawyers are licensed?
- Yes. Louisiana requires websites to list every jurisdiction where the lawyers are licensed.
- How long must a Louisiana lawyer wait to contact an accident victim?
- Thirty days.
- Is Louisiana a one-party consent state for recording calls?
- Yes, by the 2026 guide we use. Tracked lines should still open with a recording notice for callers in all-party states.
