Results, testimonials and “specialist” claims Marked D: we haven’t checked this state’s own text on results, testimonials and specialist claims, so the ABA Model Rule default applies until we do. In practice: results only if truthful and given in context; “certified specialist” only through an approved body that the ad names. ABA Model Rule 7.2 and its comments D ABA model default
Referral services and lead generators Marked D: the ABA Model Rule default applies until we check the state’s text. Lawyers may pay reasonable advertising costs and a qualified referral service’s usual charges, never for a recommendation; lead generators are allowed only if they don’t recommend the lawyer, imply a recommendation or split fees. Ads in Spanish and other languages No state rule on ads in other languages found in the sources reviewed. Our default applies: every required statement appears in each language the ad uses. CAMG white paper: Maine lawyer advertising rules D ABA model default

How we checked each rule

P Primary source
We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
S Secondary source
A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
D ABA model default
The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
U Open question
Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.

Maine is the one state where French, not Spanish, is the most common language after English: 2.3% of residents speak it at home, the highest French share in the country, against 1.2% for Spanish, the lowest Spanish share of any state. Its ad rules, by our secondary source, are minimal: no filing, a name and office address, and no waiting period found.

Defaults

Claims, referral payments and non-English ads are D. Until Maine’s text is checked: results with their facts, “certified specialist” only through a named body, vendors paid for advertising rather than recommendations (ABA Model Rule 7.2), and a French ad’s required statements in French.

Recording, texting and privacy

One-party recording (S · guide); no texting statute with private suits (D · tracker); no comprehensive privacy law (S · chart).

What this means for your SEO and ads in Maine

French speakers are mostly fluent

About 80% of Maine’s French speakers speak English “very well”, so English campaigns reach most of them. Portuguese speakers are fewer (0.24%), but 47.6% report limited English, so they’re the group most likely to need help in their own language at intake.

Three small metros

Portland-South Portland is Maine’s largest market, and Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn are the only other metro areas. Much of the state is rural, so the firm’s Business Profile, its service-area settings and clear phone intake carry the local search work.

A small, steady field

Maine has 569 employer law firms (Census, 2022). In a market this size, a few signed cases a month is normal, so we report counts and hold back cost-per-case figures until a cut reaches five cases.

Neighbors

New Hampshire, the only bordering state, requires all-party consent to record calls (New Hampshire), so tracked lines should open with a notice for callers there.
