How we checked each rule

P Primary source
We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
S Secondary source
A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
D ABA model default
The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
U Open question
Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.

North Carolina’s ad rules are light on paperwork: no filing, a named lawyer or firm with contact details, and no waiting period found. Its sharpest rule is about keywords. A 2010 State Bar ethics opinion forbids buying a competitor’s name in search ads, something Texas and South Carolina allow. Add dramatization limits for video and a Charlotte metro that runs into South Carolina, where competitor keywords are allowed, and North Carolina campaigns need their own keyword lists.

Not legal advice. We summarize North Carolina’s rules and opinions for marketing planning, from secondary sources so far. The North Carolina State Bar applies them, and the rules change. Before relying on any of it, ask your own lawyer.

Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean). North Carolina’s cells are S or D today; we check each against the State Bar’s own text before running a North Carolina ad.

What this means for your SEO and ads in North Carolina

Keywords

  • Exclude competitor names. Build a negative keyword list of rival firms and lawyers before launch, and review search terms weekly, because broad match and Google’s newer automated matching can still show your ad on a rival’s name.
  • Watch automated campaign types. Campaigns that pick their own queries need the same negative list, and a regular check of the search terms they matched.
  • Don’t confuse protection with bidding. Bidding on your own firm’s name is a different question from buying a rival’s.

Video, social and dramatizations

If a video re-enacts a crash or a client meeting with actors, check it against the State Bar’s guidance on dramatizations before it runs. We route every video script through that check and label actors on screen.

Search ads and pages

  • Name and contact details in every ad. A pinned firm-name headline plus a call asset covers it; we also put the office city in each ad, our default everywhere (Google).
  • Results with context. Keep any result tied to its facts, and keep “specialist” for lawyers with a certification you can name.

Charlotte and Hampton Roads cross state lines

  • Charlotte reaches South Carolina. There, ads must be mainly informational and name the office city, a 30-day waiting period applies, and competitor keywords are allowed (South Carolina). A campaign aimed at the whole metro has to meet North Carolina’s keyword rule and South Carolina’s content rules at once.
  • Virginia Beach-Norfolk takes in part of northeastern North Carolina, but its principal cities are in Virginia, which has a texting law with private suits (Virginia).

Spanish

The share is highest in Durham-Chapel Hill (11.2%) and the Charlotte metro (9.9%), where nearly half of Spanish speakers (47.6%) speak English less than “very well” (Census, below). Google’s search ads have matched ad language to query language since September 2026 (Google).

Questions for your counsel

  • Does 2010 Formal Ethics Opinion 14 still bar competitor keywords, and does it reach matches the firm didn’t choose, such as broad match?
  • What does the State Bar’s guidance require of dramatizations in video ads?

How Probative works in North Carolina

  • A competitor exclusion list from day one, maintained with weekly search-term reviews.
  • Primary sources at onboarding. We read the State Bar’s rules and Opinion 14 itself inside your normal setup.
  • Your attorney approves every ad and video script; there’s no filing.

Probative works with law firms in every state from day one, remotely and in person; travel terms are on the pricing page. Your attorney approves every ad before it runs, and where a state requires a filing, we prepare it and your attorney files it. Every Monday you see what each signed case cost, counted from your own records under The Probative Standard. The lawyer advertising rules by state table compares every state.

Questions firms ask

Can a North Carolina lawyer bid on a competitor’s name in Google Ads?
The State Bar’s 2010 Formal Ethics Opinion 14 forbids buying another lawyer’s or firm’s name as a keyword, by our secondary reading of it. Texas and South Carolina allow it if the ad isn’t misleading, so the answer depends on the state.
Do North Carolina lawyers have to file their ads?
No filing, by the secondary source we use. Each ad names a responsible lawyer or firm with contact details.
Can North Carolina law firm ads use dramatizations?
Fictional dramatizations are potentially misleading unless they follow the State Bar’s guidance, by our secondary source. Video and social ads with actors need that check before they run.
Is North Carolina a one-party consent state for recording calls?
Yes, by the 2026 guide we use. Charlotte-area callers may be in South Carolina, also one-party, but tracked lines should still open with a recording notice.
Is there a waiting period before contacting accident victims in North Carolina?
We found none in the source we use. We never do targeted outreach to injured people in any state.
