The rules at a glance
| Rule | What it says | Checked |
|---|---|---|
| Ad filing or review | None found. CAMG white paper: Iowa lawyer advertising rules | S Secondary source |
| What each ad must include | Name and contact details. CAMG white paper: Iowa lawyer advertising rules | S Secondary source |
| Waiting period for targeted injury contact | None found. Iowa’s own text isn’t checked yet, so our national default applies: no targeted contact with injured people at all. CAMG white paper: Iowa lawyer advertising rules | D ABA model default |
| Results, testimonials and “specialist” claims | Marked D: we haven’t checked this state’s own text on results, testimonials and specialist claims, so the ABA Model Rule default applies until we do. In practice: results only if truthful and given in context; “certified specialist” only through an approved body that the ad names. ABA Model Rule 7.2 and its comments | D ABA model default |
| Referral services and lead generators | Marked D: the ABA Model Rule default applies until we check the state’s text. Lawyers may pay reasonable advertising costs and a qualified referral service’s usual charges, never for a recommendation; lead generators are allowed only if they don’t recommend the lawyer, imply a recommendation or split fees. ABA Model Rule 7.2 and its comments | D ABA model default |
| Ads in Spanish and other languages | No state rule on ads in other languages found in the sources reviewed. Our default applies: every required statement appears in each language the ad uses. CAMG white paper: Iowa lawyer advertising rules | D ABA model default |
| Call-recording consent | One-party consent: a person on the call may record it. Recording laws by state, 2026 guide | S Secondary source |
| Texting and telemarketing law | No state texting or telemarketing law with private suits found in the 2026 trackers. The federal TCPA applies; state no-call lists and registration may still apply, but callbacks to people who asked to be contacted are generally outside them. State mini-TCPA tracker, July 2026 · 47 CFR 64.1200, the federal TCPA rules | D ABA model default |
| Privacy and health-data law | The Iowa Consumer Data Protection Act (2025) covers controllers that process data of 100,000+ consumers, or 25,000+ with half their revenue from selling data. State privacy law comparison chart, updated October 8, 2026 | S Secondary source |
How we checked each rule
- P Primary source
- We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
- S Secondary source
- A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
- D ABA model default
- The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
- U Open question
- Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.
Iowa’s largest metro area isn’t centered in Iowa. Omaha, across the Missouri River in Nebraska, takes in Council Bluffs and is bigger than Des Moines, and the Quad Cities straddle the Mississippi with Illinois. Iowa’s own ad rules, by our secondary source, are light: no filing found and a name with contact details in each ad. Four of nine cells are still ABA-model defaults, the waiting period among them.
Not legal advice. For Iowa, every rule below is either summarized by others or filled in from the ABA model. Counsel should confirm it before an ad runs.
Iowa rules in plain English
Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean).
Filing and content
No filing found. Each ad gives a name and contact details.
Verification: S · CAMG white paper: Iowa
Waiting period: a default
No Iowa waiting period was found, and the text isn’t checked yet, so our national default applies: no targeted contact with injured people at all.
Verification: D · CAMG
Claims, referral payments and languages
All three are D. Iowa ads state results with their facts, use “certified specialist” only with a named certifier, pay for advertising rather than recommendations (ABA Model Rule 7.2), and carry required statements in each language used.
Recording, texting and privacy
One-party recording (S · guide); no texting law with private suits in the trackers (D · tracker); the Iowa Consumer Data Protection Act (2025) at 100,000 consumers, or 25,000 with half of revenue from data sales (S · chart).
Rules last checked October 24, 2026.
What this means for your SEO and ads in Iowa
Council Bluffs and the Quad Cities
A western Iowa firm targeting the Omaha metro reaches Nebraska, which has its own privacy law based on business size (Nebraska). An eastern Iowa firm aiming at the Quad Cities reaches Illinois, where recording takes all parties’ consent (Illinois). Sioux City is shared with Nebraska and South Dakota, where testimonials need a set statement (South Dakota).
Des Moines and the corridor
Des Moines-West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are Iowa’s largest wholly in-state markets. Practice pages written for each city’s courts and roads, plus a Business Profile per office, are the core local search work.
