How we checked each rule

P Primary source
We read the rule, statute, court order, bar page or regulator page itself.
S Secondary source
A summary or quotation of the rule by a legal-marketing firm, law firm or tracker. We check it against the official text before relying on it for a client.
D ABA model default
The state’s own text isn’t checked yet, so the ABA Model Rule or our national default applies until it is.
U Open question
Unknown or unsettled; a lawyer must answer it.

Michigan’s lawyer-advertising rules are light: no filing, copies kept for 2 years, ABA-model rules on claims and no waiting period found. Its one distinctive ad rule targets branding. An ad that runs under a phone number, a web address or a trade name has to name a responsible lawyer. Add a recording statute that reads stricter than the courts apply it, and the highest share of Arabic speakers of any state, and a Michigan plan has its own shape.

Not legal advice. We summarize Michigan’s rules for marketing planning, from secondary sources so far. The Attorney Grievance Commission and the courts apply them, and the rules change. Confirm every point with a lawyer you retain.

Michigan rules in plain English

Each rule shows its verification code: P for a primary source we read, S for a secondary summary, D for the ABA-model default (what the codes mean). Michigan’s cells are S or D today; we check each against Michigan’s own text before running a Michigan ad.

Filing: none, but keep 2 years of copies

Verification: S, secondary source · CAMG white paper: Michigan

What every ad must say

An ad run under a phone number, web address or trade name names a responsible lawyer with contact details.

Verification: S, secondary source · CAMG

Waiting period

None found.

Verification: S, secondary source · CAMG

Results, testimonials and “specialist”

Michigan’s claims rules follow the ABA model, per our secondary source, so results appear with context and “certified specialist” only with a named certifying body.

Verification: S, secondary source · CAMG

Lead generators and referral services

Marked D, the ABA Model Rule default applies until Michigan’s own rule is checked, which matters for vanity-number and directory vendors: the firm pays for exposure, never for a recommendation, and no vendor shares its fees.

Ads in other languages

No Michigan rule covers ads in other languages that we found. An Arabic ad carries its required statements in Arabic, by our default.

Verification: D, default · CAMG, reviewed

Call recording: a mixed reading

The statute reads as all-party, but courts let a participant record their own call (MCL 750.539c).

Verification: S, secondary source · Recording laws by state, 2026

Texting law and privacy

Michigan has no state texting law with private suits in the trackers we read, so automated texts follow the federal TCPA (D · tracker · 47 CFR 64.1200). No comprehensive privacy act is in force there (S · comparison chart).

What this means for your SEO and ads in Michigan

Brand names, vanity numbers and microsites

Some injury firms market under a memorable phone number, a keyword-rich domain or a trade name. In Michigan, each of those ads still names a responsible lawyer with contact details.

  • A microsite or exact-match domain that promotes the firm is an ad run under a web address. Put the responsible lawyer’s name and contact details on it, in the footer and on the contact page.
  • A vanity-number campaign on TV, radio or search names the responsible lawyer too. In search ads, pin the firm or lawyer name to a headline so Google can’t drop it.
  • A trade name used in Local Services Ads or a Business Profile should match the firm’s real identity, and the lawyer’s name should be one click away.

Records

Keep a copy of every ad for 2 years. We keep every version, its approval and its run dates for 4 years, which covers it.

Calls

The courts’ reading lets a participant record, but the statute’s text says all-party. Don’t build intake on the narrower reading: open every tracked line with a recording notice, as we do in every state.

Arabic and Spanish

About 3.4% of Michigan residents age 5 and older speak Spanish at home. Arabic is next at 1.8%, the highest share of any state, and 43.7% of Arabic speakers speak English less than “very well” (Census, below). Google ended campaign language targeting in September 2026; ads now show for searches written in their own language (Google).

  • An Arabic campaign is worth testing where your firm’s Arabic-speaking clients live, but only with Arabic-speaking intake ready before the first ad.
  • Write Arabic ads natively and keep every required statement in Arabic.
  • Grand Rapids has a higher Spanish share (5.9%) than Detroit (3.1%), so a Spanish test can start on the west side of the state.

South Bend crosses into Indiana

The South Bend-Mishawaka metro is mostly in Indiana, which files targeted solicitations and sets a 30-day waiting period (Indiana). Southwest Michigan campaigns aimed at the whole metro reach Indiana residents.

Questions for your counsel

  • Does the rule on ads run under a phone number, web address or trade name reach the firm’s microsites and vanity numbers?
  • How does the courts’ reading of MCL 750.539c apply to recorded intake calls?

How Probative works in Michigan

  • Primary sources at onboarding. We check Michigan’s cells against its own rule text inside your normal setup.
  • Lawyer names on every brand asset: microsites, vanity-number ads and trade-name listings.
  • Your attorney approves every ad; there’s no filing, and we keep the records longer than Michigan asks.

Probative works with law firms in every state from day one, remotely and in person; travel terms are on the pricing page. Your attorney approves every ad before it runs, and where a state requires a filing, we prepare it and your attorney files it. Every Monday you see what each signed case cost, counted from your own records under The Probative Standard. The lawyer advertising rules by state table compares every state.

Questions firms ask

Do Michigan lawyers have to file their ads?
No filing, by the secondary source we use, but firms keep copies of their ads for 2 years.
Can a Michigan law firm advertise under a phone number or a website name?
Yes, but an ad run under a phone number, a web address or a trade name names a responsible lawyer with contact details, by our secondary source.
Is Michigan a one-party or two-party consent state?
Michigan’s statute reads as all-party, but courts have let a participant record their own call (MCL 750.539c), by the 2026 guide we use. Because the reading is mixed, every tracked line should open with a recording notice.
Is there a waiting period before a Michigan lawyer contacts an accident victim?
We found none in the source we use. We never do targeted outreach to injured people in any state.
Which languages matter for Michigan law firms after English?
Spanish (3.4% of residents age 5 and older) and Arabic (1.8%). Michigan has the highest share of Arabic speakers of any state, and 43.7% of them speak English less than “very well” (ACS).
