AI mention rate: measuring AI answers honestly
Definition
The share of sampled AI answers that name a law firm, measured on a fixed prompt panel, at least five runs a month, with 90% Wilson intervals.
AI mention rate is the share of sampled AI answers that name the firm, by engine, practice area, city and language, reported with a 90% interval. AI answers change from run to run, so one answer proves nothing; a rate over a fixed prompt panel can.
How it’s measured
- Mention rate = answers that name the firm ÷ answers sampled, by engine, practice area, city and language.
- Sampling. Each prompt runs at least five times a month per engine and location, in English and Spanish where the firm serves both.
- Intervals. Rates carry 90% Wilson intervals (method). We claim movement only when two periods’ intervals don’t overlap.
- Share of AI voice uses the same sample, measured against a fixed list of competitors named in advance.
What it isn’t
- Not a promise. We never promise that an AI assistant will name a firm.
- Not a headline on its own. AI “visibility scores” without intervals appear only in diagnostic sections. The headline is still signed cases.
- Not attribution. Visits referred by AI assistants are their own channel line under the attribution rules; a mention rate says how often the firm is named, not how many cases it produced.
Why it matters
People increasingly ask AI assistants which lawyer to call. Whether a firm is named is worth measuring, but only with the same discipline as every other number: a fixed sample, repeated runs, an interval, and a clear line between being named and signing a case.

Questions firms ask
- Can one AI answer prove a firm is “in” AI search?
- No. Answers vary from run to run, so the Standard samples each prompt at least five times a month per engine and location and reports a rate with an interval.
- When does the Standard say the rate moved?
- Only when two periods’ 90% intervals don’t overlap.
- Do AI visibility scores count as results?
- Not without intervals. Scores without them appear only in labeled diagnostic sections, never in headlines.
