The short answer
California law firm SEO is ordinary SEO plus a few extra limits. The Google profile needs the real firm name and a real office, location pages should match real offices, and anything a visitor could read as a promise, such as specialist titles, results or reviews, has to follow the State Bar rules. Build the clean setup first, then the content.
SEO for a California law firm is a normal search project with extra limits on what the pages can say. This guide lists the setup that has to be right first, then the content that earns visibility in Google, maps and AI answers, and the points where California’s advertising rules change what you publish.
Our general guides on law firm SEO, local SEO and the Google Business Profile apply in California too. This page adds the California layer. Start from the rules pillar and the SB 37 guide.
What has to be right on the Google profile?
Google says a profile name should reflect the business’s real-world name, as used on its storefront, website and stationery. Google says a rented mailing address that is a virtual office is not eligible for a Business Profile. Google says a service-area business should have one profile for the central office or location, with a designated service area. Google gives separate guidelines for individual practitioners, such as doctors, lawyers and real estate agents. What a firm should do: list only offices where you meet clients, use the exact firm name, and give each lawyer who needs one a practitioner profile under Google’s own guidelines.
How many office pages does a California firm need?
Google tells businesses not to create more than one page for each location, in one account or several. The same logic works for your site. Build one strong page for each real office, with the address, the lawyers who work there, the courts and neighbourhoods you serve, and the practice areas that office handles. Pages for cities where you have no office should exist only if they say something specific that a visitor needs.
Our city pages show the shape of local detail: Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, San Jose and Silicon Valley, Fresno and the Central Valley and Inland Empire.
What must the site itself show?
The required name and city must be conspicuously displayed, or intelligible if spoken (§6157.2(b)). Put the firm name and office city in the header or footer of every page, and keep the State Bar address of record on the contact page. Any communication made pursuant to this rule shall include the name and address of at least one lawyer.
How should a site describe expertise?
A lawyer shall not state that the lawyer is a certified specialist in a particular field of law, unless certified. the name of the certifying organization is clearly identified in the communication. Rule 7.4 lets a lawyer say that the practice specializes in, is limited to, or is concentrated in a particular field of law. So use “focused on injury” or “our practice is concentrated in immigration” if it is true, and “certified specialist” only for a real certification with the certifier named.
What about results pages and testimonials?
a testimonial about or endorsement of the lawyer, may be misleading For results, Section 6158.1 creates a rebuttable presumption that three kinds of message are false, misleading or deceptive. They include A message as to the ultimate result of a specific case or cases presented out of context; The results disclosure alone may not rebut the presumptions in section 6158.1 (§6158.3).
The safe pattern: publish the facts of the matter, the law involved and a plain note that results depend on the facts. Skip dollar amounts in headlines. Our guide on reviews and testimonials covers collecting them.
How do AI answers change the picture?
AI answers read your site, your profile and the sources that mention you. The same clean facts help: one consistent firm name, a real address, named lawyers with bar numbers, and pages that answer a question directly. Our AI search guide covers the practical steps. We never promise a ranking or a mention.
Which fixes come first?
| Order | Fix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First | Profile name, address and category | Wrong data suppresses every local result. |
| Second | Name and city on every page | California ads and pages show who is responsible and where. |
| Third | One page per real office | Matches the one-profile-per-location logic. |
| Fourth | Specialist, result and review wording | These are the lines a complaint is most likely to quote. |
| Fifth | Answer pages for common questions | These feed Google and AI answers. |
What does this mean for your firm?
- Clean the profile first: exact name, real office, one profile per location.
- Audit expertise and results wording against Rule 7.4 and the electronic media presumptions.
- Publish office pages with real detail, not copies with a different city name.
Read the injury marketing guide and the Spanish marketing guide for case-type detail. Practice pages for personal injury SEO, immigration SEO and family law SEO show the work by case type. The California state page is the short version.

Questions about this guide
Do California advertising rules apply to my website?
The article treats computer networks as electronic media, and in our reading a firm's own pages count. Treat the website like an ad: name, city, no guarantees, and disclosures on results.
Can I create a page for every California city?
Only for places where you have a real office or a real service need. Pages that repeat the same text with a city swapped in are thin content, and Google asks for one profile per real location.
Can an attorney bio say specialist?
Only as Rule 7.4 allows. Say certified specialist only with a real certification and the certifier's name. Saying the practice is concentrated in a field is safer if true.
Can I show client reviews on my site?
Yes, but a testimonial can mislead if it implies the same result for you. Keep reviews real and add a plain note that every matter is different.
