The short answer

In California, a Google ad for a law firm has to show the firm or lawyer name and an office city, and its copy has to stay clear of guarantees, money and unlabelled actors. Local Services Ads add Google's own license checks. The safest setup pins the required words, keeps variants few, and checks each listing before it goes live.

California lawyer ads on Google have two jobs. They must carry the right words, and they must stay clear of claims the statute treats with suspicion. This guide covers search ads and Local Services Ads, which are the pay-per-lead ads with the Google Verified badge, and what a firm should do in each.

Read this with the SB 37 guide, the California rules pillar and our general guide to Local Services Ads for lawyers.

What must a California Google ad show?

The required name and city must be conspicuously displayed, or intelligible if spoken (§6157.2(b)). For a search ad that means the firm or lawyer name and an office city. Put them in the ad text itself, not only on the landing page. The relief for platforms with character, display or time limits is written for a joint advertiser acting under section 6155(g), not for an ordinary firm ad (§6157.2(b)(3)).

How do responsive search ads fit that?

A responsive search ad is built from many headlines and descriptions that Google mixes. Google warns that assets can be shown in any order, so each one has to make sense alone and in combination. Google says text that should appear in every responsive search ad must be pinned to Headline position 1, Headline position 2, or Description position 1. So pin the firm name and city, and keep every other asset safe to appear alone.

What copy should a California ad avoid?

A guarantee or warranty of success regarding the outcome of a legal matter statements or symbols about immediate cash or quick settlements. An ad may not contain misleading, deceptive or false statements about a lawyer’s or law firm’s skills, experience or record (§6157.2(a)(5)).

For injury ads, also avoid showing money. The money presumption reaches monetary symbols and the implication of wealth, not only dollar amounts (§6158.1(c)).

How do Local Services Ads work for lawyers?

Local Services Ads put your firm at the top of a local search with a call button. Google says Local Services advertisers must have a public and verified Google Business Profile to advertise with Local Services Ads. Google also screens the firm. For personal injury lawyers, Google lists state bar license checks for each personal injury lawyer in the firm. For immigration lawyers, Google lists state bar license checks for each immigration lawyer in the firm. For family lawyers, Google lists state bar license checks for each family lawyer in the firm. Google’s screening list for these lawyer categories also shows professional liability insurance. Google also lists business owner identity verification.

What a firm should do: confirm every lawyer’s bar status, keep the professional liability policy current and match the profile’s firm name to the firm name on your website.

Start with Local Services Ads if you answer the phone fast and have a clean Google profile; start with Google Ads if you need control of keywords and pages.

What about Spanish ads?

Rule 7.1 comment 5 bars an ad from stating or implying that the lawyer can provide services in another language unless the lawyer can actually do so, or the ad states in that language the employment title of the person who speaks it. Google says that from September 2026 the campaign-level language targeting setting is removed for Search campaigns, and Search ads match automatically on the language of the ads. So the ad language now follows the ad text you write. Write the Spanish ad only for a language the firm can serve. Our Spanish marketing guide for California covers the details, and our injury marketing guide covers the injury-specific limits.

What about lead vendors and referral services?

A referral service must be certified by the State Bar of California (§6155(a)(1)). it is unlawful to act as a runner or capper for any attorneys (§6152). Do not buy leads from a vendor that cannot show how it is allowed to refer clients. Our vendor questions guide has the list.

What does this mean for your firm?

  • Pin the name and city in every California search ad, and check the Local Services listing shows them.
  • Strip risky copy (guarantees, money, results and fee-paid awards) from every ad and extension.
  • Keep licences and insurance current so Local Services Ads stay live.

Practice-specific ad work is on the personal injury ads, immigration ads and family law ads pages. For your market, see Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. The California state page holds the short version.

Questions about this guide

Do Local Services Ads work for California lawyers?

Yes, for the lawyer categories Google lists, such as personal injury, immigration and family. Google checks the state bar license of each lawyer in the firm, so each lawyer needs to be in good standing.

Can I run Google Ads in Spanish in California?

Yes. California's rule on language claims says to run Spanish ads only if someone at the firm can actually serve the client in Spanish, or the ad names that person's title in Spanish.

What is the first fix on a California Google Ads account?

Pin the firm name and office city into the ad text so they show in every combination Google builds, then remove any guarantee, money or results wording.

Should a firm run Google Ads or Local Services Ads first?

It depends on what you have now. A firm with a verified Google profile and fast phone answering can start with Local Services Ads. A firm that needs control over keywords and landing pages starts with Google Ads.

Step 2 of 2. Where should we send the video for your site?

We use this to send your video and to reply to you.

We use what you send to reply and to send a few short follow-up emails (unsubscribe any time). To learn which of our ads work, we tell Google, Microsoft and Meta that a request came in, with the ad you clicked (if any) and a hashed copy of your email and phone (a code the platforms can still match to you), never your message. Never sold, never added to lists. Global Privacy Control or an email to us turns this off. By sending this form you agree to our privacy policy.
