Business law ads work best on the searches that name a problem or a deal, and on audiences defined by job and company. We run Google search, Google’s Local Services business categories, Microsoft search with LinkedIn targeting, and LinkedIn ads in your own accounts, and your attorney approves every ad. We judge them by retained matters, counted in your own records.

Which ad channels fit a business practice?

Channel Role Notes
Google search The main channel, by matter type Keep dispute searches apart from deal searches
Local Services Ads A business lane for local owners Needs calls answered by a person; graded by retained matters
Microsoft search A smaller channel with business audiences Can adjust bids by job function and industry
LinkedIn ads Business reach by job title and company Best with a guide offer, not a hard sell
Meta and YouTube Rarely the lead channel here Tested only where owners are reachable by place

The table shows that search leads, and that the other channels are tests to be earned by the retained matters they bring.

What do the Google Local Services categories mean for business work?

Google separates lawyers into narrow groups. Google’s US list has 17 lawyer categories: bankruptcy, business, contract, criminal, disability, DUI, estate, family, immigration, IP, labor, litigation, malpractice, personal injury, real estate, traffic, and a general ‘Lawyers’ category. Unlike some other categories, none of the lawyer categories is limited to certain states. A business firm may choose among business, contract and litigation, and should pick the closest fit to its best work.

Two cautions. First, Google says local services advertisers “cannot sell or pass leads to other businesses”, so a call is never forwarded to a network. Second, a call from a person who wants a job or a form is not a client. We grade calls for the first few weeks before the budget grows.

How do Microsoft and LinkedIn reach business audiences?

On Microsoft search, Microsoft Advertising allows you to target potential customers based on their LinkedIn profile information. It works as a bid adjustment, since LinkedIn profile targeting will not narrow your ads’ audience. That suits a firm that wants to bid more when a search comes from a finance leader at a company in an industry it serves.

On LinkedIn itself, two policy points matter. LinkedIn’s advertising policy says that ads must not target based on sensitive data or categories. We target by job and company only. And LinkedIn’s advertising policy says that ads related to affiliate advertising are prohibited. So we never set up an ad in a way that looks like paid referral marketing. See Microsoft ads and Google Ads.

What can a business ad say?

  • Describe the work. “Partner dispute lawyers for business owners.” Not “the best business lawyers.”
  • Be careful with titles. California’s rule on false or misleading communications reads that A lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer’s services. In Illinois, “Certified”, “specialist” or “expert” may be used only to name an actual award, with the required Illinois disclaimer (7.4(c)).
  • No result claims for past matters, and no client names.
  • Your attorney approves every ad, and a copy is kept.

The state-by-state list is on lawyer advertising rules by state. This is not legal advice.

What search terms do we block?

Junk group Examples of what people typed
Jobs and careers business attorney jobs, corporate counsel salary
Free forms free LLC operating agreement template, sample NDA
Do-it-yourself how to form an LLC myself, online incorporation service
Students and research business law casebook, what is a shareholder
Matters you do not take consumer debt, family law, criminal charges

Two people review each block, and a term that led to a retained matter is never blocked.

Data sent to Google

Google gets only the standard data: a click ID, a neutral stage name, a value band and a time. Never a client name, the other side of a dispute, deal terms or case facts. Values come from your own fees by matter type, whether hourly, flat or contingent, in a few bands.

Which searches should business law ads block, beyond those groups?

On top of the groups above, we block the themes below. They go in as a shared negative list on day one, and we read the search-terms report every week for the first month. A term that led to a retained matter is never blocked.

Theme Example phrases
Free legal aid free business lawyer, small business legal aid, pro bono business clinic
The other side landlord eviction help, employee wage complaint form, debt collector for business invoices
Wrong kind of matter divorce attorney, DUI lawyer, personal injury lawyer
Wrong place business lawyer in a state you do not serve, attorney near a distant city
Research business judgment rule definition, LLC statute text, commercial law case search

Where Local Services Ads fit, they are usually the first test for local owners with a simple need. Search adds control of message and keywords, so shareholder disputes, sales and purchases, and Spanish go to search first, with LinkedIn as a test. Local Services Ads depend on answered calls, because “the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds” on a call you missed can be charged. We review lead quality each week and raise invalid leads with Google through the account’s tools.

What do Google and Meta limit for business law ads?

Business law has no limit written just for it. Google Ads has no policy written just for lawyers. Law-firm ads follow the general policies, and Google expects you to follow the law in every place your ads show, which includes your state bar’s ad rules. Meta’s Advertising Standards have no restricted category for legal services, and legal is not a special ad category. Special ad categories cover housing, employment, financial products and services, and social issues, elections or politics. The limits that matter are LinkedIn’s and your bar’s rules on titles, covered above.

How we measure it

The report shows each paid channel by matter group, with early signals (calls answered, consultations booked) beside the final count of retained matters. A line is judged only once it has enough retained matters to mean something.

What this means for your firm

  • Put the budget on problem and deal searches first, and earn the rest.
  • Keep expertise wording plain and approved by your attorney.
  • Treat LinkedIn and Microsoft as tests, judged by retained matters.

Questions firms ask

Do business clients click on ads?

Some do, especially in a dispute with a deadline or a deal that is moving. Others use search only to check a name they were given. So we separate urgent searches, which suit ads, from reputation searches, which your site and profile must win.

What is a good LinkedIn test for a law firm?

A small test aimed at job titles and company types you serve, with a guide offer instead of a hard sell, run for long enough to see retained matters. LinkedIn can cost more per click than search, so we judge it only on signed engagement letters.

Can ads say we are business law specialists?

Only if your state allows the word and your lawyers meet its conditions. We default to describing the work, such as 'Partner dispute lawyers for business owners,' and your attorney approves every ad before it runs.

What should we do with early-stage inquiries that are just questions?

Treat them as nurture, not as clients. Send a useful guide, offer a short call, and track whether any later retain. We keep them on their own report line so they do not inflate the count of retained matters.

Step 2 of 2. Where should we send the video for your site?

We use this to send your video and to reply to you.

We use what you send to reply and to send a few short follow-up emails (unsubscribe any time). To learn which of our ads work, we tell Google, Microsoft and Meta that a request came in, with the ad you clicked (if any) and a hashed copy of your email and phone (a code the platforms can still match to you), never your message. Never sold, never added to lists. Global Privacy Control or an email to us turns this off. By sending this form you agree to our privacy policy.
