Business and commercial law ad rules in Florida

Owners and executives search by the problem: a contract dispute, a partner leaving, a deal, a lease or a lawsuit. Florida has more law offices per resident than the national rate. Below: Florida’s ad rules for a business and commercial law firm and the local figures behind them.

How would we work with a business and commercial law firm in Florida?

We would start with Google + SEO, because owners compare firms on expertise, so matter-type pages and the Google profile carry the search ads: $8,750 a month with managed ad spend up to $15k (every price). The SEO part is priced by market size, and Florida’s largest metro areas by the Census count of residents aged 5 and over are Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL (about 5,917,567), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (about 3,142,341) and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL (about 2,642,125).

We would point the first pages, map listings and ad locations at the Southern District of Florida, which takes the most federal contract and intellectual property suits in the state.

What are the key facts for business and commercial law ads in Florida?

  • Results and “specialist” claims. References to past results must be objectively verifiable, and a prediction or guaranty of results is deceptive (Rule 4-7.13(b)(1)-(2)).
  • Referral services and lead generators. A lawyer may not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer, except the reasonable cost of permitted advertising, the usual charges of a lawyer referral service, lawyer directory, qualifying provider or other legal service organization, and a practice purchase (Rule 4-7.17(b)).
  • Ad filing. A lawyer files a copy of each ad with The Florida Bar at least 20 days before first use, with a fee (Rule 4-7.19(a), (h)).
  • Privacy and health data. Florida's Digital Bill of Rights (Fla. Stat. 501.701 to 501.722, in force July 1, 2024) defines a controller as a for-profit entity with more than $1 billion in global gross annual revenue that also meets one of three tests: 50% of revenue from online ads, a smart speaker service, or an app store with 250,000 apps. A law firm below that size is not a controller.

Business clients compare firms on expertise, so “specialist” and “expert” wording and results claims draw the closest reading.

What have Florida’s ethics opinions said?

  • The Florida Bar, Board of Governors, opinion 18-1 (2018-12-14), on permissible payments to for-profit qualifying providers (lawyer referral / matching services): A lawyer may pay a lead or matching service a fixed fee per period, click or referral, but not a percentage of fees or a flat fee per case accepted. What to do: Pay lead and matching services only fixed fees not tied to whether you are hired or how much the case is worth.

Which Google, Local Services and Meta policies matter for business and commercial law ads?

Florida adds its own layer to the Google, Local Services and Meta business and commercial law rules: ad filing is listed as filed before first use, and what every ad must show is listed as name plus office address or city. The platform rules themselves are on the ads page and the policy tracker.

What else in Florida touches business and commercial law marketing?

  • What each ad must include. Every ad for legal employment must include the name of at least one lawyer or the law firm responsible for its content, and the city, town or county of one or more bona fide office locations (Rule 4-7.12(a)). If the case may be referred to another lawyer, the ad must say so (4-7.12(b)). Required words must appear in each language used in the ad (4-7.12(c)) and be clear and conspicuous (4-7.12(d)).

Where in Florida would a business and commercial law firm start?

Start with the metro pages: Jacksonville law firm SEO, AI search and Google Ads, Miami law firm SEO, AI search and Google Ads, Orlando law firm SEO, AI search and Google Ads, Tampa Bay law firm SEO, AI search and Google Ads. Spanish-speaking demand and the full Florida rules are on the Florida rules page.

What these figures leave out: federal courts only; state court cases are not counted; admissions, not lawyers who practice in the state; counts offices, not lawyers; BLS withholds some county figures. Corrections log.

How would a business and commercial law firm plan its first quarter in Florida?

Owners and executives search by problem: a dispute, a departing partner, a deal, a lease, a lawsuit. Give each problem its own page. Miami comes first, since South Florida and Spanish-first search reach many owners. Jacksonville follows with its port economy, and Tampa Bay with a profile built for search that spans the bay. Take care with words like specialist and expert, since buyers read them closely. Florida lists filing as before first use. On day one, intake runs a conflict check before any detailed talk, then books a short call with a lawyer.

Count retained matters at engagement letter signature, after the conflict check, once per matter. Compare problem pages and metros on that count, and cut the page that draws questions but no matters. Look hard at results claims and trim any you cannot back from your own files. Florida lists recording as all-party, so say it at the start. Texting is listed as state law with private suits, so keep texts to people who gave a number for it. Privacy is a comprehensive law in force, so mind what you collect on forms.

What does this mean for your business and commercial law firm in Florida?

  • Florida privacy law is listed as: Comprehensive law in force. Keep skill wording factual: describe the work, not a title you have not earned.
  • The Southern District of Florida takes the most federal contract and intellectual property suits in the state: start your pages and map listings there.
  • A retained matter is counted when the engagement letter is signed after the conflict check, once per matter.
