Bankruptcy ads reach people at the moment of pressure, in a category platforms watch closely. We run Google search ads, Google’s Local Services ads (the “Google Verified” badges) and carefully limited social ads, with the debt relief statement built in, and judge the work by retained clients (new clients who signed your fee agreement), counted in your own records. The overview is on bankruptcy marketing.

The channels

Channel Role Notes
Google search ads The main channel, by situation and city Call button and short form; ad hours match who answers
Local Services ads Google has a bankruptcy category (Google) Strong for “near me” and fast calls; see Local Services ads
Microsoft search A second search channel, often older searchers Show the firm’s real street address on the page
Meta and YouTube Awareness and Spanish-language reach Describe the service, never the viewer; no debt questions in forms
Retargeting Not used Platforms limit it in this category, and the audience is sensitive

The statement and the ad

Every bankruptcy ad needs your attorney’s review against the federal statement. The statute says a debt relief agency must clearly and conspicuously disclose in any advertisement of bankruptcy assistance services the required wording, and it gives this statement: We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for bankruptcy relief under the Bankruptcy Code. A substantially similar statement is also accepted. Search ads have little room, so the statement goes on the landing page’s first screen in readable type, and any ad with its own space carries it. The full explanation is in the bankruptcy lawyer marketing guide. Not legal advice; your counsel decides.

What the platforms limit

  • Google audiences. Google’s ad policy says advertiser-curated audiences cannot be used if promoting in sensitive interest categories (Google). Bankruptcy campaigns use keywords, location and Google’s own audiences only.
  • Consumer finance targeting. In the US and Canada, ads in housing, employment or consumer finance can’t target by gender, age, parental status, marital status or ZIP code. Radius targeting of at least 1 km is allowed. Housing covers real estate services; employment covers job ads and hiring. We use city and radius targeting.
  • Meta’s special category. US advertisers running financial products and services ads must choose the ‘Financial products and services’ special ad category, which replaced ‘Credit’. These ads (and housing and employment ads) lose age, gender and ZIP targeting, lookalike and saved audiences, and need at least a 15-mile radius.
  • Meta wording. Meta ads can’t assert or imply that the viewer has a personal attribute, including a health condition, disability, vulnerable financial status or criminal record. Meta’s own ‘not allowed’ examples include ‘Are you bankrupt?’ and ‘Are you a convicted felon?’. So we write “bankruptcy consultations”, not “Drowning in debt?”
  • Meta lead forms. Without Meta’s prior written permission, lead ad forms can’t ask about criminal or arrest history, bankruptcy or debt, health or disabilities, insurance details, or government ID numbers such as Social Security numbers.

Search terms to block, and to target

Group Examples Action
Do it yourself free bankruptcy forms, file bankruptcy without a lawyer Block
Court and records lookups bankruptcy court case search, PACER login Block
Credit repair and debt offers credit repair, debt settlement, consolidation loan Block; we never offer them
Jobs and school bankruptcy paralegal jobs, bankruptcy law course Block
Pressure searches stop wage garnishment, lawsuit from credit card company Target, with calm copy
Direct searches bankruptcy attorney near me, flat fee bankruptcy lawyer Target
Spanish searches abogado de bancarrota, ayuda con deudas Target, with Spanish ads

Values and timing

Values come from your own fees by matter type, in a few bands, so a simple matter and a longer, higher-fee matter do not look the same to bidding. We send Google only a click ID, a neutral stage name, a value band and a time. Never a debt amount, never a creditor’s name, and never a name or phone number from your clients. Many bankruptcy clients sign within days of the first call, giving the account a quick signal.

Which searches should bankruptcy ads block, beyond those groups?

Besides the groups above, we block the themes below. They go in as a shared negative list on day one, and we read the search-terms report every week for the first month. A term that led to a signed client is never blocked.

Theme Example phrases
Free legal aid free bankruptcy lawyer, legal aid bankruptcy, pro bono bankruptcy help
The other side how to file a proof of claim, collect from a debtor in bankruptcy, creditor address
Wrong kind of matter student loan forgiveness program, tax lien removal service, divorce lawyer
Wrong place bankruptcy lawyer in a state you do not serve, bankruptcy attorney abroad
Research bankruptcy code section text, bankruptcy definition, bankruptcy case law

Where Local Services Ads are offered, they are usually the first test for local consumer matters, and Google has a bankruptcy category. Search adds control of message and keywords, so repayment-plan work, small-business filings and Spanish go to search first. Both depend on answered calls.

Category fit matters. Google’s descriptions place workers’ comp, SSA claims, SSI and veterans’ disability under ‘Disability lawyer’; dog bites, product liability and wrongful death under ‘Personal injury lawyer’; and foreclosure and repossession under ‘Bankruptcy lawyer’. Missed calls also cost money: Google describes a charge when “the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds” after a call you missed. We review lead quality each week and raise invalid leads with Google through the account’s tools.

What do Google and Meta limit for bankruptcy ads?

Google’s debt services policy is written around credit counselors, so bankruptcy ads should read as legal representation, never as debt relief or credit repair. The federal debt relief agency line also goes in the ad. Meta limits wording that tells the viewer they are in debt.

Google’s US debt services policy covers advertisers who are approved non-profit credit counseling agencies under 11 U.S.C. §111, or a national association of them. The statute says a debt relief agency must clearly and conspicuously disclose in any advertisement of bankruptcy assistance services the required wording, so every ad is reviewed against the statement above.

How we measure it

The monthly report shows each paid channel by situation group, with booked consultations as an early signal and retained clients as the count, plus answer rate and speed beside them. Cost per retained client appears once a line has enough clients to mean something. The organic side is at bankruptcy SEO and AI search; the call process is in bankruptcy intake and consultations. Our Google Ads guide shows the setup in general.

Questions firms ask

Can a bankruptcy ad say we will stop a foreclosure or wage garnishment?

We do not write it. No firm can promise a result before it knows the facts, and platforms and bar rules treat guarantees harshly. Ads describe what you do, such as consultations and representation, and let the consultation answer what is possible for the caller.

Why do bankruptcy ads show fewer targeting choices?

Platforms treat money trouble as sensitive. Google limits advertiser-curated audiences in sensitive categories, and Meta puts financial ads in a special category with less targeting. So we target by keyword and location, which fits bankruptcy well, since people search at the moment they need you.

Which debt searches do bankruptcy ads leave out?

Do-it-yourself forms, free filing help, bankruptcy court lookups, jobs, credit repair, debt settlement offers, and loan companies. A search that ever led to a retained client is never blocked, and your team reviews the search terms with us every month.

Do you run a call-only campaign?

Often, for pressure searches. A caller with a notice in hand wants a person, so a call button can beat a form. We set ad hours to when someone answers, record calls in your own tracking account, and judge it by retained clients, not call volume.

Step 2 of 2. Where should we send the video for your site?

We use this to send your video and to reply to you.

We use what you send to reply and to send a few short follow-up emails (unsubscribe any time). To learn which of our ads work, we tell Google, Microsoft and Meta that a request came in, with the ad you clicked (if any) and a hashed copy of your email and phone (a code the platforms can still match to you), never your message. Never sold, never added to lists. Global Privacy Control or an email to us turns this off. By sending this form you agree to our privacy policy.
