Data · New York attorneys

New York lawyers, county by county

How many lawyers have an office in each New York county, how many are currently registered, how many have lapsed, resigned or died, and how long ago they were admitted. We count the New York court system's public attorney registration list, publish counts only and check every county against the state total and the American Bar Association's count.

What is in this dataset?

How many lawyers are on New York's official attorney registration list, county by county. For each of the 62 counties the file counts the attorneys whose office address is there by registration status (currently registered, inside the 30-day reregistration window, delinquent, resigned, deceased, disbarred or suspended, incapacitated), by decade of admission to the New York bar, and per 10,000 residents using the Census Bureau's county population estimate. Further records count registrations with an office in each other state or territory, registrations with no office address in the public file, and the four judicial departments of admission, and the state record carries the admission-year history. Only counts are published: no name, address, phone number, firm or registration number is read, because the pull asks the court's open data portal for server-side totals and never downloads rows. Counts of one to four in a disciplinary status or an admission decade are withheld. Every record adds up to the state, the state ties to the source's own row count, and the American Bar Association's 2025 count of New York resident active lawyers sits between the two bounds the file allows.

Use it to see how many lawyers already serve a New York county before choosing where to advertise: active attorneys per 10,000 residents, how many are newly admitted, and how many are no longer in practice (delinquent, resigned, deceased). A county here is where the attorney's office is, not where clients live, and a lawyer in New York City may serve clients across the state. More than a quarter of the active attorneys have no office address in the public file and another quarter list an office outside New York, so county totals count lawyers with a published New York office, not every New York license.

Where does the data come from?

The court system's open data portal is asked for server-side totals only (counts grouped by county, registration status, state of the office address, year of admission and judicial department), so no row of the registration file is downloaded; counts are rolled up to status groups and admission decades, matched to the shared county list, and cells of one to four in a disciplinary status or admission decade are withheld.

Not legal advice. These are counts of attorney registrations from the New York court system's public registration file, kept for research and marketing planning. A registration status is the court's record, not a judgment of any lawyer's skill or standing beyond that record, and a county is the county of the office address the lawyer gave, not where the lawyer practises or where clients live. Rights and deadlines in a matter are for your own counsel.

What are the limits?

  • A county here is the county of the office address a lawyer gave the court, not where the lawyer's clients live or where cases are filed. A lawyer with an office in Manhattan can serve clients anywhere in the state.
  • The court's public file leaves the office address blank for a large share of registrations, and about a quarter of the active attorneys list an office outside New York. County counts are lawyers with a published New York office, so a county's real supply can be larger. The state record shows each part.
  • Active means currently registered, plus lawyers inside the 30-day window to renew their biennial registration. Delinquent, resigned, deceased, suspended and disbarred lawyers are counted in their own columns and not in the active count.
  • Counts of one to four lawyers in a disciplinary or incapacity status, and in a decade of admission, are left out so no single lawyer can be picked out. Totals are never left out.
  • Registration is not practice: a registered lawyer may be retired, in-house, in government or practising another kind of law, and the file has no practice area. The file is posted by the court quarterly and shows each lawyer's latest registration.
  • Records older than 135 days since their last check are marked stale in the files until we re-check them. Every confirmed error we fix is listed in the data corrections log.
